Vaccines are biological products that stimulate the immune system to provide protection against specific infectious diseases. They contain weakened or killed pathogens or their parts, helping the body develop immunity without causing the disease.
The immune system in our bodies is taught how to defend ourselves against disease by vaccinations. They make use of the inherent abilities of our immune system, which encounters and eliminates millions of germs daily.
Vaccines are developed through research and testing on cells, animals, and humans in clinical trials. Approved vaccines undergo large-scale manufacturing and distribution. Continuous post-market surveillance ensures safety and effectiveness.
On average, it takes between 12-36 months* to manufacture a vaccine before it is ready for distribution. Vaccines are complex biological products with lengthy manufacturing and control processes.
There are many new vaccines currently being researched and developed within our industry, including use of viral vector vaccines, non-replicating vectored vaccines, RNA vaccines, DNA plasmid technology and immunotherapy. A number of vaccines in development target diseases that are difficult to treat, such as HIV/AIDS and other viral diseases.
